Holiday Help is Here!
For most of us, the
holiday season is hectic and can at times become overwhelming. We know that for
many of our families this is a difficult time of year. If this is the
case for you, the ABTA’s new caregiving service, MyCaringLink, may be of
interest. MyCaringLink is a web-based service that is designed to help families
organize, prioritize and schedule errands, tasks and obligations; share
important updates; and let friends and family members know the many ways in
which they can be of help. Visit the
ABTA’s Anytime Learning section of our website and
watch a pre-recorded webinar on the new service. To access and register for MyCaringLink,
click
here. Now when friends and family
members ask how they can be of help, you can send them to your personalized MyCaringLink
web page and let them select the best way that they can help out this season.
Also, remember that the
ABTA’s professional Care Consultants are skilled listeners and
experienced in helping patients and family members navigate the range of
emotions often brought on by events of the season. Call 800-886-ABTA (2282) or
send an email at abtacares@abta.org.

between the “watch and wait” approach and taking immediate action, the types of
treatments that are possible, and what the risk factors and deciding factors
may be. You can view this and other previously broadcast webinars at the Anytime
Learning section of our website.
You can also register now for our upcoming 2013 webinars, including “Coping with Caregiver Stress,”
“Multidisciplinary Approaches to Treating
Pediatric Brain Tumors,” and “Understanding Palliative Care.”

Brain
Tumor Incidence and Prevalence Statistics Updated The Central Brain Tumor Registry of the United States (CBTRUS) recently released its November 2012 Statistical Report which estimates the 2013 the incidence of primary brain tumors—the number of people diagnosed during the year—at 69,720 people. Of these, 4,300 will be children. CBTRUS estimates the prevalence of brain tumors – the number of people living with the diagnosis – at 688,096. It is important to note that while these figures represent increases over previous statistics, they are likely attributable to better brain tumor diagnosis, methodology and tracking.
The report also reveals that the most common primary brain tumors remain meningiomas (36%), followed by glioblastomas (16%) and pituitary tumors (14%). To help ensure access to these important statistics, the American Brain Tumor Association supported the printing of this report for distribution to the brain tumor scientific and medical community. The data is available online.

Cognitive Function in Long-term Survivors of
Medulloblastoma Scientists at St.
Jude Children’s Research Hospital recently investigated the association between
the condition of the white matter of the brain and higher-level thinking
processes in adult survivors of pediatric medulloblastoma. Twenty adult
patients who received craniospinal irradiation (CSI) as children and were more
than 10 years post-diagnosis were randomly recruited from the St. Jude Lifetime
Cohort Study to participate in this research. The survivors underwent
comprehensive assessments of their neurocognitive (thinking and processing)
functions, and MRI scans to determine brain volume and thickness. The study,
presented in a supplement to the journal Neuro-oncology
titled “Applied Neuro-Oncology (2012),” suggests a relationship between reduced
integrity of the white matter of the brain and impairments in executive
functions such as ability to shift problem solving strategies between two
tasks, planning and organization. Notably, self-reported challenges in these
areas did not necessarily match the test findings, indicating that survivors
may adapt over time. For the article abstract, click here.
