Each day, 500 people will be diagnosed with a brain tumor. To show my support, I will be participating in the American Brain Tumor Association’s BT5K Breakthrough for Brain Tumors Run & Walk. Money raised by the BT5K will provide critical funding for brain tumor research and for supportive patient care.
The importance of brain tumor research really hit home for me in January 2012 when my young grandson (3 years old) was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Needless to say, the family was all devastated. Carson endured surgery and then 15 months of chemo therapy. He had to wear braces because the chemo weakens ligaments in the ankles and feet. He had weekly physical therapy as well. Following that first round of chemo, he enjoyed freedom from "medicine day" for about a year. He and his family had the pleasure of visiting San Diego California thanks to the Make A Wish Foundation. They played in the ocean, toured the San Diego Zoo as VIPs, visited Sea World and Lego Land. It was a wonderful time of respite and refreshment away from the stress and cares related to health, work and school that had been so exhausting.
Unfortunately, the tumor started to grow again. Another year of chemo therapy begain in October 2015. The MRIs that have followed have shown the tumor to be stable. He started school this year "chemo free"! He is an active 9 year old who loves arts and crafts as well as Pokemon, Tae Kwon do, swimming, and riding his bicycle. I pray constantly for Carson's continued renewal of health, strength and energy enough. I invite you to pray as well.
