My name is Natalie, and I am extremely proud to say that I am a brain tumor survivor! This will be the 5th year that Team Nat will be participating in the BT5K Los Angeles Breakthrough for Brain Tumors Run & Walk, an inspiring and fun event benefitting the American Brain Tumor Association.
In August 2013, a few days of really bad headaches unexpectedly turned into finding out I had a Grade 2 Astrocytoma, which without the ABTA, I honestly had no idea there were over 120 different types of brain tumors! That December, over 4 years ago, my wonderful surgeon was able to remove 90% of that tumor. In August 2016 that little jerk of a tumor decided to grow back, and I had my second brain surgery in October 2016. After 6 weeks of radiation and chemotherapy, and a continuation of chemotherapy for the next year, I am proud to say I am officially in remission and I don't plan on this darn thing ever coming back, but I know if it does I have the amazing support from every single one of you awesome people to kick its butt again!!
All this craziness of dealing with a brain tumor has led me to look at each new day in a very positive aspect. There's no way to know what this brain tumor can possibly lead to, but I also don't allow myself to be scared anymore. My motto in life is to "live fearlessly" and live each day to the fullest, and I've been trying to spread my positivity to as many people as I can.
Being part of an event like the BT5K helps all of us – patients, survivors, caregivers, family, and friends – to realize we are not alone. All of us here are contributing to more research on brain tumors, finding new types of treatment, increasing education for everyone, and providing resources and support for people like me who honestly have no idea what's going on in their brain. I am amazed with the American Brain Tumor Association, and I am proud of all of us who are here to support this incredible organization.
I would absolutely LOVE to have as many friends, family or even complete strangers involved in this fundraiser for an amazing association! If you can come to the Walk/Run, I will be so excited to see you there with me! Click on the link that says Team Nat and you'll be able to join my awesome team!
