Each day, 500 people will be diagnosed with a brain tumor. I was 4 when my mom found out she had an inoperable benign brain tumor that had done a lot of damage. You can read her story here: http://hope.abta.org/goto/CharFuentes. The following year I started raising awareness in our community by dedicating my weekends to having informational booths storefront at Albertsons on the 79, at the Temecula Valley Wine and Balloon Festival, local Safety Fairs, my school events and at local sports parks. I was able to help raise funds for the doctors to research better treatment options by helping plan and carry out Cupcakes for a Cause sold at my school's dances and open house events, Bobbi Dall Scentsy fundraiser parties, a school raffle for 5 of my fellow students to win a Limo Outing with the Principal for Frozen Yogurt, and I also helped my parents with a Chips for Charity Poker Night with Silent Auction. I stayed up until midnight just to hand out the trophy to the winner!
To date, with the help and support of my community, family and friends, this has amounted to over $11K in donations for the ABTA to research better treatment options and ultimately find a cure! I was humbled this year to learn I was the first child recipient of Charity for Charity's "Brightest Star of the Valley" award for my humanitarian efforts. I was also excited to find out that Kohl's Cares selected me as their Regional Scholarship Winner in 2015 for my charity work and that a research grant was named in my honor, the American Brain Tumor Association's Medical Student Summer Fellowship in Honor of Jonathan and Charmain Fuentes, and was awarded to Mr. Jason Pia, a medical student at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in 2013. My fundraising efforts have been featured in My Temecula Magazine as a Rising Star and the Press-Enterprise Newspaper, bringing even more awareness to our local community about brain tumors and the ABTA.
