On Saturday, May 19th, 2018, Team Char will be participating in the American Brain Tumor Association's 5th Annual Breakthrough for Brain Tumors 5K Run & Walk in Los Angeles, CA. Each year, the Breakthrough for Brain Tumors 5K Run & Walk provides critical funding for brain tumor research and for supportive patient care.
We got involved with this walk the very first year the ABTA held it in LA in 2013. My son, Jonny, had just turned 7 and after seeing everything I had gone through after diagnosis, wanted to make a difference and help others like me. You can read about my personal battle with a brain tumor here: http://hope.abta.org/goto/CharFuentes
That first year, Jonny was the highest individual fundraiser for the event and our team was the second highest in overall donations! A research grant was named in our honor, the American Brain Tumor Association's Medical Student Summer Fellowship in Honor of Jonathan and Charmain Fuentes, and was awarded to Mr. Jason Pia, a medical student at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. Jonny was so excited to learn that your fundraising dollars were going directly to research!! Jonny’s fundraising efforts have been featured in My Temecula Magazine as a Rising Star and the Press-Enterprise Newspaper bringing even more awareness to our local community about brain tumors and the ABTA. In June 2015, Jonny was a regional winner of the Kohl's Cares Scholarship Program for children who dedicate their time to charity work. And in February 2017, he received his first humanitarian award at Charity for Charity's Benificiary & Awards Gala as the 2017 "Brightest Star of the Valley" presented by La Masters of Fine Jewelry. To date, he's helped raised over $11,000 for research!! None of this would have been possible without the help of our friends, family, Temecula Valley Pop Warner, Cub Scouts Pack 148, Temecula TGA Junior Golf, Temecula Valley American Little League, Redhawk Golf Course, Temeku Hills Golf Club, Legends Golf Club, Bobbi Dall Scentsy, Temecula Valley Balloon & Wine Festival, and the Temecula Unified School District who have all helped Jonny and our team acheive our fundraising goals.
Every fundraising dollar counts and we are so thankful to all of our supporters! This year’s goal is to grow our team by having more friends and family join us for the walk and double our donations over last year. With your help, anything is attainable!
The more the merrier! I’m inviting all my friends to join my team in support of the nearly 700,000 people currently living with a brain tumor. You can join my team by clicking the join button on the right.
If you can’t make it to the BT5K Los Angeles on May 19, 2018 at USC, please consider making a donation to the American Brain Tumor Association in support of the team’s efforts. Click the donate button on the right.
Thank you in advance for your support of our efforts on behalf of brain tumor patients, their families, and the researchers pursuing the breakthroughs.
