2018 BT5K Twin Cities

#KellyStrong

Welcome everyone to another year of the ABTA BT5K!

We’re very excited to be participating in the BT5K again this year. The 2018 event will be the fourth consecutive year that team #KellyStrong has participated in the Twin Cities event. Each year has been such a fun time and we really enjoy sharing the day with friends and family and seeing all of the love and support.

This past June marked the three year anniversary of Kelly's diagnosis and thanks to her inital treatments and the ongoing love and support of family and friends, Kelly continues to survive the disease. The recipe for her success has been a combination of faith, science, will and love and it’s a recipe that the ABTA works tirelessly to bring to those affected by brain tumors.

One of the ways the ABTA uses the funds raised is to further advancements in medical research and technology. Kelly was fortunate enough to have access to some of the newest advancements in surgical procedures that quite frankly, probably saved her life. Had Kelly’s diagnosis come just 18 months earlier she may have not gotten the surgery to remove the tumor that she did because the procedure simply didn’t exist yet. Her condition would have been deemed inoperable and an entirely different approach would have had to been taken. Thanks to funding by organizations like the ABTA, Kelly got to write a different story.

Every day, five hundred people are diagnosed with a brain tumor which is roughly one person every three minutes. That means in about the time that it takes you to read this page another person will have heard the words “You have a brain tumor” and had that sinking feeling you get when you hear horrible news. That person’s loved ones would have thought to themselves “Oh my God, am I going to lose her?” while trying to keep a strong composure. And it would mark the beginning of another long, painful battle of surgeries, radiation and chemotherapy to try to beat the disease. Worse is that fact that roughly every thirty minutes someone will lose their battle with a brain tumor.

The good news is that brain tumors can be beat. The good news is that we’re getting better at beating them every day. And the good news is that you can help.

If you can make it, we’d love to have you come join our team and support Kelly and all of the other people fighting brain tumors. The event is on October 13th starting around 9:00 AM. You can either run or walk the lovely 3.1 miles around Como park.
