Below is what Steve wrote about his own story on the brain tumor group online:
"Apr 20 2006 18:00 :
Hi, my name is Steve Marino, and I am a brain tumor survivor.
Let me see, where do I start....
October of 95 I had an "occurance", not knowing what happened to me, I figured it was cause of exhaustion. I just changed jobs, my life was turned upside down, my feet hurt, etc. etc..
August 22, 1996:
I was returning from a Jethro Tull (w/ Emerson, Lake, and Palmer) show, stopped in the Orange Lantern for a drink, hooked up, went to bed.
My parents awakened to a sound "that I never want to hear again" (quoted from my father).
Subsequently a "mass" was found. It was about the size of a golfball. It was in the left-frontal lobe of my brain.
"Take it out" I replied.
In Nov. 96 (11/11) it was taken out by Dr. Kelly, a Neurosurgeon at New York University hopsital, where we were gonna "watch it", to see if Chemotherapy was needed. Hindsight was 20/20.
I ended up back in there for a "scar tissue" scare (2000). But all was fine.
Sept. 2003. My doctors said I needed another operation because it was growing again.
This time I was insistant on doing what was right, Chemotherapy and radiation. My tumor was operated my Dr. Patrick Kelly, Neurosurgeon at University of California, San Francisco. Subsquent chemotherapy was taken by Mouth, Temodar, and the Big Radiation machine did the rest.
2 years with the chemotherapy, (just ended, yea!) and 40 days of radiation. I used to keep the mask with my markings on it.
Nah...
Steve"
Steve passed away on June 10th, 2007 from complications of the tumor.
